Some of you may have heard there’s a college basketball tournament going on. It’s a time of year when office productivity comes to a screeching halt for many. In fact, if the study conducted annually by outplacement firm Challenger Gray & Christmas is to be believed, this year’s lost output in the U.S. is predicted to be at least $134 million. And while the firm admits their report is less than scientific, there’s no doubt that this time of year plenty of office employees’ focus is divided between the tournament and their normal workplace responsibilities. That’s especially true now thanks to the proliferation of smartphones, tablets and almost ubiquitous Wi-Fi connectivity.
But is the NCAA tournament the biggest productivity drain? According to this piece by CNBC.com, “Is March Madness So Bad? Comparing Productivity Killers,” the answer is, no. Not by a long shot.
Check out the CNBC piece and share any thoughts you may have.
Oh, and in case anyone’s wondering, I have Duke over Indiana in this year’s title game.
